Ekiti State is set to make a strong impression at the 2025 AGILE Games, a national initiative aimed at showcasing the talents, innovation, and creativity of secondary school students across participating states.
Organized by the Adolescent Girls’ Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) Project Implementation Unit under the Ekiti State Ministry of Education, the AGILE Games 2025 will feature students competing in seven exciting categories: Debate, Essay Writing, Painting, Digital Literacy, Environmental Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Basketball, and Spelling Bee.
The selection process for Ekiti’s representatives began in February 2025, with preliminary examinations coordinated by Area Education Officers across all 16 Local Government Areas and Tutor Generals of the three senatorial districts.
Following rigorous assessments at the local and state levels, the top 10 schools in each category were selected to represent Ekiti at both state and national stages.
According to Mrs. Yewande Adesua, the Ekiti State AGILE Project Coordinator, the process was thorough to ensure only the best schools and students were picked. “We carried out extensive assessments involving the Area Education Officers, tested creativity, critical thinking, and innovation, and ensured fairness at every stage. We are proud of the students selected and confident they will excel at the national level,” she said.
Student registration for the first phase took place between April 14 and 18, with an additional window from April 25 to 29 for sports categories, all submitted through the World Bank’s dedicated portal. Final submissions of creative projects, such as digital entries, paintings, and entrepreneurship products, are scheduled between May 7 and 9.
In a special addition to the state-level schedule, Ekiti State will host Borno State in a thrilling interstate knockout basketball match on May 12, 2025. The friendly yet competitive fixture—organized as part of the pre-national event build-up—will see the boys’ basketball teams from both states battling for early bragging rights and sharpening their skills ahead of the national playoffs. The game is expected to draw attention from sports enthusiasts and further ignite the competitive spirit among the students.
At the state level, competitions and assessments will run from May 7, culminating in the State Award Ceremony on May 16, 2025. Basketball teams are scheduled to arrive for the national games on May 22, with playoffs beginning May 23. Other participants in non-sport categories will arrive on May 25, while the prestigious National Award Ceremony will hold on May 27 in Abuja.
Expressing her delight, the Ekiti State Commissioner for Education, Dr. (Mrs.) Olabimpe Aderiye, emphasized the importance of such platforms in building future leaders. “The AGILE Games offer a golden opportunity for our students to display excellence not just academically, but also creatively and athletically. It aligns with our commitment to nurturing holistic, world-class students in Ekiti State,” she stated.
AGILE Games 2025 is designed not just to foster academic and creative excellence among adolescents but also to build confidence, teamwork, and leadership skills critical for future success. Ekiti State’s delegation, consisting strictly of SS1 and SS2 students, is poised to compete with peers from six other states: Borno, Katsina, Kaduna, Plateau, Kano, and Kebbi.
As preparations continue, excitement is building among students, parents, and educators, all eager to see Ekiti State make a resounding impact at the 2025 AGILE Games.
